COMPARISON OF EFFECTIVENESS OF SINGLE VS MULTIPLE SWEEPING AT TERM FOR INDUCTION OF LABOUR

Abstract

Objective: To compare the outcomes of single vs multiple sweeping at term for induction of labour

Study Design: Randomized controlled trial

Study place and period: Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, CMH Gujranwala, Pakistan, from April to October 2025.

Methodology: Ninety women were enrolled and distributed randomly in two equal groups. In Group-A, women underwent membranes sweeping only once. In Group-B, women underwent multiple membranes sweeping. Then women were followed-up in OPD until active labor and delivery. Bishop score, sweeping to delivery interval and mode of delivery were noted. All this data was recorded in proforma and analyses by SPSS v.25.

Results: The median age of pregnant women was 27.00 (IQR: 9.50) years while in multiple sweeping group was 26.00 (IQR: 10.50) years. At the time of labor, the median Bishop score of women was 8.00 (IQR: 4.00) in single sweeping group while 9.00 (IQR: 4.00) in multiple sweeping group (p<0.05). The Bishop score was better with multiple sweeping. There were 31 (68.9%) women with favorable cervix in single sweeping group while 39 (86.7%) women in multiple sweeping group had favorable cervix. The median sweeping to delivery interval was 7.00 (IQR: 3.50) days in single sweeping group while 5.00 (IQR: 3.00) days in multiple sweeping group (p<0.05). In single sweeping group, 18 (40.0%) underwent cesarean section while 27 (60.0%) had vaginal delivery. In multiple sweeping group, 8 (17.8%) underwent cesarean section while 37 (82.2%) had vaginal delivery (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Thus, the labor and delivery outcomes can be achieved better with multiple sweeping.
